Free screening of Electrick Children at Gate Cinema, Notting Hill

Summer holidays are here (or a nearing) and….well, we’re spending it indoors. Bloody rain. But I guess there’s a silver lining: Gate Cinema is offering us broke students shelter and a free movie!

Electrick Children follows the tale of mormon virgin Rachel who finds herself pregnant after listening to a forbidden tape recording of The Nerves’ Hanging On the Telephone. Rachel flees to Las Vegas after she is unable to confront the shame and forced marriage and goes off on a search to find the man behind the song.

To get yourself a free ticket as well as an E4 Slacker’s Card pop down to Gate Cinema at any time with a NUS card or college/university ID. With your new clubcard, you can visit any Picturehouse cinema to watch the month’s free feature films – in this case, it is Electrick Children. You would have to be…well, not a student to miss it. That or you have bottomless funds. Or a job.

For more information and additional viewing times and dates of Electrick Children, visit the Gate Cinema website.

The Slacker’s Club is a collaborative scheme by E4 & Picturehouse Cinemas to showcase the latest independent/ alternative film.

My Notting Hill: Karen Scofield

Originally seen on nottinghillgate.co.uk – posted on 06 December. Written by Courtney Beard.

Whilst King’s Road chats with Gina Conway, Notting Hill gets a conversation going with Karen Scofield, creator of luxury brand Lucza.

Here’s an excerpt:

Well, when I was in New York City I worked for US Open and the NFL in television production as well as special events.  I came to London and began working for Comic Relief which translated to RED which Bono (U2 front man) started to raise global funds to fight aids.

Tweets of the Week: 05 – 13 Nov

Thanks to Twitter’s recent changes, sourcing some of the tweets I need have been a bit of a pain. For you seasoned Twitter users, you know that there was a tab for your Mentions and Retweets with the latter offering the option to poke around the tweets the user has retweeted. Now you can see my problem.

That aside, let’s look on what the Twit-o-sphere has brought us this week.

_

The news: 140 characters a day, 7 days a week

A salute to our fallen heroes.

_

After years in the Italian spotlight, Silvio Berlusconi has finally handed in his resignation. Better late than never; this is a man who enjoyed ‘bunga bunga’ parties with women young enough to be his granddaughter, made a fool of himself in front of foreign leaders and sank Italy into the economic death hole they are in now.

And if you’re worried about what will happen to the ex-PM, don’t fret! He has a mere $7 million to fall back on.

_

So yesterday was the ‘nerd new year’, 11/11/11. Big whoop. I was more interested in Armistice Day and how I managed to somehow create a story about a frog from my friend’s ability to mispronounce words (don’t ask).

_

The totes lush neighbahood

I have mastered the art of blogging inside a King’s Road Starbucks: chillaxing in the World’s End one or procrastinating and people watching in the Shawfield Street one.

_

If you’re in Holborn, High Street Kensington or King’s Road Chelsea, visit My Old Dutch. Giant pancakes. I’ll say no more.

_

SCORE. A TWEET FROM GABILICIOUS FROM MADE IN CHELSEA.

_

Nothing beats a wander in the Hill on a Sunday morning.

_

I love this cinema and the fact they have something free to offer to students makes me love them even more. Who wants to tag along?

_

My insignificant problems

I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 6 years old and I’ve never been called four eyes. I had a good run; how many years was that? A good 13 years?

_

Speaking of four eyes, my poor glasses somehow managed to break. No, I didn’t drop them or anything like that. I simply touched them while it was sitting on my face then it just….fell apart. Guess I need to find some super glue.

__

Picture, picture

SO. MUCH. WWAAAANT.

_

and finally…

Doesn’t beat the subtitles on BBC Breakfast though. Instead of ‘wellies’, the subtitling instead gave us ‘willies’.

Originally seen on nottinghillgate.co.uk – posted on 29 September.

Like cake but worried about your weight (ooh, that rhymes)? RBKC’s Bikeminded Cake and Coffee Tour could be just the thing to satisfy your sweet tooth and please your annoying secondary school PE teacher. Starting from Notting Hill, the tour will guide you across the borough, going through numerous locations such as Knightsbridge and the famous King’s Road.

Here’s an excerpt and a video I made:

The cost of the tour is just £5.00 per person and includes cakes and coffee. You’re asked to bring your own bike, although you can hire one from a Barclays Cycle Hire Docking Station nearby. Tickets are on sale now – book a place by visiting here.
